The future installation of a purification system will allow Arkema to decarbonise the acrylics production and strengthen its European market position.
The international manufacturer of specialty chemicals Arkema has recently announced that it will install a new purification system in its production site in Carling (France) in order to improve operational efficiency as well as reduce the CO2 emissions by 20%,
starting from 2026.
The plant manufactures acrylic monomers that are employed in performance coatings, adhesives and water treatment. The demand for these products is rapidly growing, due to their intense use in electronics, electric vehicle batteries, new energies and 3D printing.
The €130 million investment for a new purification system has been funded by the French State and the European Union – NextGenerationEU. It will allow Arkema to make its operations more sustainable by optimising the resources and waste management as well as decreasing the employment of solvent. As a matter of fact, the low-energy technology that will enable the company to decarbonise its acrylic monomers, speciality resins and additives in combination with the progressive introduction of bio-renewable raw materials, reinforcing its market position as a key supplier of lower carbon footprint solutions.

After the introduction of bio-based acrylic monomers in 2022 using the mass balance approach, this new project at Carling is another key step to position Arkema as a leader in low carbon acrylic materials, and to help our customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions” has stated Richard Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Coating Solutions.
