The award recognises a dry coating process designed to reduce energy consumption, space requirements and material waste in battery electrode production.

Dürr has received the E-Mobility Production Award 2026 in the ‘Process Innovation in Battery Production’ category for its X.Cellify DC dry coating technology.

Based on industrially proven calendering processes, X.Cellify DC eliminates the energy-intensive solvent drying stage required in conventional liquid painting. According to Dürr, this significantly reduces energy consumption and the space needed for electrode manufacturing, while providing flexibility in processing different active materials.

Wide process windows enable adaptation to different material systems and future battery cell generations. The technology also allows excess active material to be fully returned to the production process, improving material efficiency. Analyses of the electrodes produced have additionally indicated positive effects on their physical and electrochemical properties, with potential benefits for battery cell performance.

“This award validates our approach of consistently rethinking electrode manufacturing. With X.Cellify DC, we have developed a technology that significantly reduces resource consumption in battery cell production while offering fast and flexible adaptation to different active materials. In doing so, we are laying the groundwork for cost-effective and sustainable cell manufacturing on an industrial scale,” has stated Peter Smyrek, R&D Engineer for LiB at Dürr, who accepted the award.

The E-Mobility Production Awards are organised jointly by the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH Aachen University, PEM Share and Berylls by AlixPartners, in cooperation with the VDMA network organisation. The community award recognises machinery and plant manufacturers whose technologies improve efficiency, quality or sustainability in battery production.

Following a preliminary selection by an award committee, the shortlisted innovations were submitted to a public online vote and subsequently assessed by participants through a live vote at the Battery Production Days.

Having completed the proof-of-concept stage, Dürr is now working with an industry partner to scale up the technology further. The next development phase aims to advance the industrialisation of dry coating and support flexible, resource-efficient electrode manufacturing suitable for mass production.
