PPG’s excimer ultraviolet (UV) coatings for consumer electronics combines durability with an ultra-matte finish.

PPG has recently announced that its excimer ultraviolet (UV) matte-finish coatings for consumer electronics have been recognised with the 2026 Ringier Technology Innovation Award in the Coatings Industry category. The annual awards, which acknowledge products and technologies that advance the coatings industry through innovation and practical application, were presented during the recent China Coatings & Ink Summit & Expo in Shanghai.

Excimer coatings are cured using specialised excimer (excited dimer) UV light that forms an ultra-matte, soft, skin-like texture. PPG excimer UV coatings are available in both waterborne and solventborne formulations and are engineered for both metal and plastic devices, including notebook computers, keyboards, mobile phones, wearable devices, and smart home products. They cure significantly faster than conventional technologies, providing manufacturers with the flexibility to meet a range of different production and application requirements.

“Consumer electronics brands are seeking finishes that combine premium aesthetics with reliable performance. Our excimer UV coating technology helps customers achieve distinctive ultra-matte surfaces with a refined soft-touch feel, while supporting durability and manufacturing flexibility. This award recognizes the innovation behind the technology and our commitment to helping customers bring differentiated products to market,” has stated Sun Hongyi, PPG General Manager, global consumer products, Industrial Coatings.

In addition to their unique surface feel, PPG excimer UV coatings provide excellent resistance to fingerprints and smudges, high durability against scratches, abrasion, and wear, as well as good colour stability with improved resistance to yellowing.
