The topping-off ceremony of the new headquarters of Sherwin-Williams commemorates the safe and successful end of steel work.

The international paints and coatings manufacturer Sherwin-Williams has recently announced that on Monday 04th December 2023 it has hosted the topping-off celebration of its new headquarters in Cleveland (United States of America), marking the completion of the construction structural work of the project, which began the previous year.

The topping-off ceremony is a tradition in the construction industry: it commemorates the safe and successful end of steel work with the placement of the final steel beam, recognising the accomplishments of the construction crew. The beam has been adorned with an American flag and an evergreen tree, symbolising good luck for the future occupants, new or continued growth in concert with the environment and a safe job.

“It is exciting to see the significant progress being made on our new global headquarters and we are so proud to be investing in the future of our Company and the future of the region, which has been our home since 1866,” has stated John Morikis, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sherwin-Williams.

The ceremony also included the remarks of the mayor of Cleveland and of Tom Broad, the CEO of Midwest Steel – a female-owned firm providing the structural steel for the project. Following the remarks, the final beam bearing the signatures of more than 600 construction workers, supervisors, project architects, engineers and designers, as well as local elected officials and the executives of the company was raised by a crane into its final position.

“We thank the talented construction crew for their dedication to working safely and consistently and for successfully accomplishing this important project milestone. With this event, we are that much closer to moving into our state-of-the-art workplace designed to spark creativity and innovation that will serve our customers and retain and attract talent,” has declared Heidi Petz, the president and Chief Operating Officer of Sherwin-Williams. “We have been committed to this community for more than 157 years with a focus on creating opportunities for all. We are proud of our strategic collaboration with city, county and state leaders and local organisations on this project. Our approach has resulted in workforce opportunities for many, including numerous minority-owned, female-owned and small businesses.”

The new facility, which covers an area of almost 93,000 m2, is part of the Building Our Future project and will hosts around 4,000 employees. It will serve as the front porch to Public Square and consist of a two-story pavilion, a 36-story tower and a multi-level parking garage.

“I was honoured to be part of this important Building Our Future project and taking the opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of the construction crew who are helping not only change the city skyline but also strengthening the economic future of Cleveland. We applaud all of the firms involved in safely progressing the project and making this milestone a reality,” has commented Justin Bibb, the mayor of Cleveland.
