The new Accelshield™ range of coatings from AkzoNobel leads the shift towards a bisphenol-free future in beverage packaging

Packaging Coatings has announced the launch of its latest Accelshield™ BPA non-intentionally added (BPAni) coatings range at Abralatas 2025 – thus marking the introduction of advanced can body solutions to the Brazilian beverage market.
The Accelshield range of internal can and beverage end coatings offers high-performance, bisphenol-free solutions that help can makers and brand owners meet evolving regulations and consumer expectations, supporting the industry’s shift towards a bisphenol-free future.
“The transition away from bisphenols represents one of the largest material shifts the beverage packaging industry has ever faced. At Abralatas, we’ll be sharing how our Accelshield technologies enable that change – by providing reliable, compliant, and future-proof solutions that don’t compromise on performance,” has stated Manoel Rodrigues, Regional Commercial Director, AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings.
At the event, Dominique Fort from AkzoNobel will take part in a panel discussion addressing the challenges facing the industry amid regulatory change. He will underline the importance of a structured, forward-looking approach from can makers and industry bodies to manage the transition effectively.
On its exhibition stand, AkzoNobel will showcase two key beverage inside spray coatings from the Accelshield portfolio. Accelshield 150, a waterborne BPAni internal coating for can bodies, has been in commercial use globally since 2015. It delivers the flexibility, chemical resistance, and corrosion protection associated with traditional epoxy systems, and is approved by a wide range of brand owners. The coating also provides excellent mobility and processing efficiency on high-speed production lines.
The newly introduced Accelshield 300 coating takes performance and responsible innovation a step further. Free from bisphenols, phenolics, formaldehyde, and styrene, it represents the most regulatory-advanced and future-ready solution currently available. Accelshield 300 offers exceptional corrosion protection, flexibility, and sensory performance, with laboratory and brand testing confirming improved flavour performance
compared to earlier-generation coatings. Complementing these BPAni innovations, AkzoNobel will also highlight its Aqualure™ epoxy-based inside spray coatings, widely trusted by can makers for their proven reliability and performance.
“We’re helping the metal packaging industry transition responsibly towards coatings free from materials of concern. By combining proven epoxy technologies with a growing portfolio of next-generation BPAni solutions, AkzoNobel ensures its customers are equipped to meet both current market needs and evolving future regulatory standards affecting their markets,” has added Manoel Rodrigues.
