Cortec Launches VpCI®-649 for Corrosion Protection During Hydrotesting

Date: 27/10/2022

Cortec has launched VpCI®-649 to provide corrosion protection during and after hydrotesting.

Although hydrotesting is performed to ensure that there are no leaks and that the vessel will withstand expected operating pressures, it also increases the risk of corrosion by introducing moisture into the system. The same water that proves that the vessel is not compromised can be the cause of the corrosion that deteriorates the metal and leads to leaks over time. To solve this problem, Cortec® launched the VpCI®-649 series for hydrotesting.

VpCI®-649 is a unique concentrated liquid formulation that combines contact and Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors. The inhibitors form a molecular protective layer on metal surfaces below and above the water level. VpCI®-649 protects ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including copper, steel, galvanized steel, aluminium and cast iron. The product is free of nitrites, phosphates or chromates.

Hydrotesting for long or short term corrosion protection

When dosing VpCI®-649, users must decide how long they want the corrosion protection to last and adjust the concentration and dwell time accordingly. The options range from protecting the metal only during hydrotesting to protecting the metal up to two years after the hydrotest. Extended storage is often desired when the metal component must undergo a period of shipping or storage before being put into service.

Multiple fields of application

Around the world, VpCI®-649 has been used for countless applications, including valves, pipelines, piping and vessels on wellhead towers, and other oil and gas industry equipment.
