Evonik closed a contract for using green electricity from the Kaskasi wind farm in the North Sea.

The international chemicals supplier Evonik has recently concluded a long-term contract with the energy company RWE for using green electricity. The following agreement foresees that the company will purchase 37.5 gigawatt hours of electricity annually from renewable source coming from the offshore wind farm ‘Kaskasi’, (North Sea). In mathematical terms, this corresponds to the needs of over 10,000 private households and avoids almost 16,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Furthermore, thanks to this agreement, Evonik is getting closer to its goal of converting 100% of its electricity supply to green energy by 2030. Today, 35% has already been achieved on a global scale and, with the conclusion of new contracts PPA, the share will continue to increase significantly. The supply of electricity from "Kaskasi" will help to reach well beyond the 50% threshold - thus allowing Evonik to become less dependent on fossil fuels.

The supply of electricity is structured as a Power Purchase Agreement - PPA - a form of contract that offers a high level of planning and security in green electricity supply thanks to an agreed duration and fixed conditions. The Kaskasi wind farm came into operation on the high seas approximately 35 kilometres from the island of Heligoland at the beginning of 2023 and consists of a total of 38 wind turbines.

Lastly, in order to make an eco-friendly energy transition possible, Evonik has a management system for its chemical parks and sites – allowing the company to harmonise electricity supply and demand, while contributing to balancing grid stability.
