Stainless Steels and Corrosion: An Advanced Theoretical and Practical Course Organised by Centro Inox and Polilapp

Date: 03/01/2014
Categories: Other news

Given the success of the first edition, Centro Inox – the Italian Association for the Development of Stainless Steels – in collaboration with PoliLaPP – the Corrosion Laboratory "Pietro Pedeferri" of Politecnico di Milano, Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "G. Natta" – has organised the second edition of its course, with four days of study on the corrosion of stainless steels. The course will be held on February 12, 13, 19 and 20, 2014, at the premises of PoliLaPP, Milan.

There are many circumstances in which we rely on the "magic" word stainless steel in the hope to prevent any corrosive phenomenon over time. In fact, especially in the most common applications but also in some high responsibility ones, this material has certainly unique qualities that make it, thanks to its auto-passivation ability, the most common alloy, used in harsh environments of any type. However, it often happens to bump into devious and unexpected corrosion phenomena, in terms of both morphology and rapidity of development. In the vast majority of cases, it can be seen that the behavioural abnormalities during the service life of a component made of stainless steel depend on a wrong choice of the alloy as a function of the intended use, on a non suitable processing and/or welding, on an inadequate implementation system or on incorrect maintenance procedures. There are over 200 types of stainless steels (that can certainly be considered "young" materials within the large family of steels), which means that a very wide range in terms of performance is currently available in the market. This is a unique event. First of all, because it will only concern the different families of stainless steel, also in light of the very recent developments. Secondly, because all the issues will be dealt extensively, giving ample space to the debate. Laboratory activities will be organised, too. Precisely this synergy between theoretical lessons and practical tests is the most characteristic feature of this event, an important opportunity for anyone who uses or deals with these materials in corrosive environments. All the teachers have a solid understanding of the issues discussed, not only thanks to their long academic career, but also to a long "field experience" in many application areas. All participants will be given extensive technical documentation, in addition to the certificate of attendance.
