Polymeric solutions provider Belzona celebrates its 70th anniversary and renews its commitment towards a more sustainable future.

Belzona, a specialist in polymeric solutions that find application in several industries, is celebrating its 70 years anniversary.

Founded in 1952, Belzona now hosts a network of 140 international distributors operating in over 120 countries. In the past 70 years, the company helped numerous clients to avoid asset decommissioning and replacement by actively improving their assets using industrial coatings and repair composites for the long term.

Belzona has also nurtured a strong commitment to sustainability.

“Protecting and repairing existing assets is key in helping customers to reduce their carbon footprints. For example, being able to repair the casing of a centrifugal pump, giving it a second life, will have a significantly lower carbon footprint than having to replace the equipment. This concept of repair is not new: Belzona has been around for 70 years, but the environmental benefits have never been as important as they are today”, stated Jérémie Maillard, Export Sales Director at Belzona Polymerics. “If an operator, whether a wastewater plant or a major oil and gas customer, needs to scrap a piece of equipment, they will have to factor in the economic cost of replacement. Also, more importantly, they will have to factor in the environmental impact: cost of disposal of the old equipment and the impact of making and shipping the new equipment. Considering the ease in which these drawbacks can be bypassed simply by calling a local Belzona Engineer, there are massive savings, both financial and environmental to be gained.”

In addition to the carbon mitigation that can be achieved with Belzona’s protective coatings and composite repair systems, Belzona is also committed to investing in environmentally sustainable practices within the business. For example:

  • Development of products with high levels of renewable carbon content. The Belzona Research and Development Team are currently in the process of formulating products made from bio-based materials that are produced from sustainable plant-based feedstocks, rather than the traditional fossil-fuel based ingredients.
  • Maintenance of equipment to ensure efficiency. Regular maintenance is carried out by Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and in-house Plant & Facilities Reliability (PFR) teams to ensure that critical equipment continues to run efficiently, and new equipment is purchased when required.
  • Products supplied in unit sizes designed to minimize waste. Taking into account the product’s usable life and potential applications, the unit size of each product is carefully considered to ensure that minimum waste is created.
  • UN cartons with reduced cardboard content and increased strength. Thanks to manufacturing technology improvements, Belzona’s cardboard packaging is stronger than previous packaging, but has less fibre weight. In turn, this creates a reduced environmental impact.
  • Quarterly site environmental audit. This includes the monitoring of various areas within the business (compliance, site drainage, waste management etc.), to ensure that environmental requirements are being fulfilled.
