In 2017, Parklands in the Gold Coast became the area's biggest urban renewal project.
The master-planned project was the result of a collaboration between Archipelago, Arkhefield, ARM Architecture and LAT27, and was designed to "celebrate design, livability, and sustainability."
In 2018, Parklands became the athletes' village during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, in which 6,500 competitors stayed at the site.
The accommodation's most distinctive features include the bright, color-saturated buildings and the Village Heart. The athletic village is an explosion of color, popping off the surrounding area and creating a more vibrant backdrop for visitors. Fiery reds, deep blues, verdant greens and sunny yellows were all included in the site's color palette with the intention of capturing the essence of the Gold Coast.
The centerpiece of the site, the Village Heart, features a large artificial lake. At one end, a structural pavilion stands. The pavilion, named the Disc, provides a visual central point for the entire village. The structure features an oculus, through which a vertical waterfall cascades.
Given the visual significance of the Disc and the extremes exposure it encounters on a daily basis, a high performance coating system was absolutely necessary to preserve the pavilion. A&I Coatings' V700 Vitreflon, an FEVE fluoropolymer, was applied to the Disc's fiberglass exterior.
