The initiative is set to further AkzoNobel’s goal of halving its carbon footprint by 2030 and complements Alight’s mission to decarbonise the grid.
The paints and coatings supplier AkzoNobel
has signed its first power purchase agreement (PPA) in Sweden with leading Nordic solar developer and independent power producer, Alight. The deal involves the development of a 15 MWp solar park in Uppsala municipality, set to bolster both companies’ renewable energy ambitions.
Under the agreement, Alight will finance, build, own and operate the solar facility, while AkzoNobel will procure a portion of the clean electricity at a stable and competitive rate. The green energy will power AkzoNobel’s adhesives site in Kristinehamn and its protective coatings plant in Gothenburg. Once operational in 2027, the solar park is expected to generate 16 GWh of electricity annually – enough to meet the needs of around 3,200 households.
“Teaming up with Alight, a trusted and experienced solar developer, marks a key milestone on our path to sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2030. We’ve already transitioned all our European manufacturing sites to 100% renewable electricity, and this agreement helps secure sustainable power for most of our Swedish operations. It also supports Sweden’s wider shift to clean energy by adding new solar capacity to the national grid,” has stated Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel’s Director of Sustainability.
In addition to the Swedish PPA, AkzoNobel is exploring further renewable energy opportunities, including an offsite solution for its Malmö site, which operates in a different power zone. The company is also planning a similar agreement in Germany as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy.
“We’re thrilled to partner with AkzoNobel, a recognised sustainability leader in the global paints and coatings sector. Their commitment is a bold step forward in accelerating the energy transition,” has added Johan Hernström, Head of PPAs at Alight.
