With this continued push toward sustainable innovation, BASF Coatings remains a leader in driving environmental progress in the global coatings industry.

BASF Coatings is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by expanding its line of biomass-balanced products globally, with North America set to receive its first automotive coatings under this innovative approach in 2025. This marks a significant step forward in the company’s strategic roadmap for sustainable development.

Following successful rollouts in Europe and Asia, BASF will introduce its biomass-balanced refinish coatings to the North American market, further supporting the reduction of CO₂ emissions and advancing circular economy principles within the coatings industry.

BASF Coatings currently offers more than 250 products across three regions and business segments using the biomass balance approach. In 2024 alone, this strategy helped reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 8 million kilograms, with a goal to reach 10 million kilograms saved in 2025.

“We are strengthening our commitment to sustainability with this expansion into North America. Our goal is to deliver high-performance, environmentally conscious solutions while actively supporting our customers in transitioning to a more sustainable coatings industry,” has stated Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings.

The biomass-balanced products are marketed under brands such as ReSource for OEM coatings, Glasurit® Eco Balance, and R-M® eSense for automotive coatings and textured films. These offerings substitute part of the fossil resources used in manufacturing with certified renewable raw materials.

“Using our mass balance approach, we’re replacing fossil inputs with renewable materials from the very beginning of the value chain. Each biomass-balanced product is certified under the REDcert² scheme, verifying that renewable raw materials have replaced the required amount of fossil resources in the final product,” has added Dennis Dropmann, Sustainability Manager at BASF Coatings.
