The 5th edition of the “Pietro Pedeferri” Study Day, dedicated to corrosion and materials protection in memory of the founder of the Corrosion and Protection of Metallic Materials school at Politecnico di Milano, will take place on 27 November at the university’s Conference Hall.

Held every two years, the event has addressed different areas of corrosion science and engineering over the years, fostering dialogue between academia, research and industry on scientific and technological advances in these fields. Previous editions have covered topics ranging from new frontiers in corrosion engineering, the focus of the inaugural event in 2018, to the durability of reinforced concrete structures in 2020, stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement in 2022, and the anodising of light alloys in 2024.

This year’s edition, entitled “Cathodic Protection: Science, Engineering and Industrial Applications”, will bring together experts from academia and industry to explore the state of the art in cathodic protection, with particular attention to the latest research, new applications and practical experience gained in the field.

The programme will feature contributions from academia and research institutions, alongside presentations by industry experts and professionals. As the organisers explain, the aim is to bridge advances in corrosion science and their engineering applications, with a particular focus on the principles, methodologies and practical experience associated with cathodic protection and cathodic prevention for buried structures, structures exposed to seawater and reinforced concrete elements.

Event organisation

The event is organised by PoliLaPP – the Pietro Pedeferri Corrosion Materials Laboratory at Politecnico di Milano, part of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering Giulio Natta. It is held under the patronage of APCE (Association for Protection against Electrolytic Corrosion), AIMAT (Italian Association for Materials Science and Technology), AMPP Italy, AIM (Italian Association for Metallurgy), INSTM (National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology), ATE (Association of Building Technologists), Centro Inox (Italian Stainless Steel Development Association), CTA (College of Steel Construction Engineers), and AICAP (Italian Association for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete).
