Out of the niche: Dürr CTS scales up electric exhaust air purification for heavy industry

Date: 03/06/2026

The new Oxi.X line electrifies RTO systems for high volume flows and VOC loads, eliminating fossil fuels and operational CO2 emissions.

Industrial air pollution control via electric heating is no longer just a niche solution. Dürr CTS has significantly expanded its market reach by becoming the first manufacturer to offer its entire portfolio of regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) systems in an electrically heated configuration.

This breakthrough means that electric RTO technology can now be deployed in heavy industrial applications handling high volumetric flow rates of up to 120,000 Nm³/h, high pollutant concentrations, and corrosive exhaust gases, typical of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and automotive sectors.

The purification of solvent-laden (VOC) exhaust air from coating lines has traditionally relied on natural gas. By replacing gas burner systems with electric heating elements, Dürr CTS retains its proven multi-chamber thermal process while removing the open flame.

The result is identical purification performance in strict compliance with legal codes, but with zero operational CO2 emissions and no thermal generation.

“We have installed over 5,000 RTO systems worldwide over the last 30 years. With the shifting political landscape since 2022 and the subsequent rise in primary energy costs, pioneering the electrification of our entire RTO range was the logical next evolutionary step,” has noted Carsten Walddörfer, Head of Product Management at Dürr CTS

Previously, electric RTOs faced design limitations when dealing with aggressive media, such as halogenated compounds, because metallic heating elements corrode rapidly. Dürr CTS has solved this by offering heavy-duty ceramic heating elements capable of withstanding highly corrosive exhaust gases over the long term.

The expanded line addresses the automotive and manufacturing sectors' urgent demands: reducing carbon footprints and ending reliance on gas supplies. The systems can leverage renewable energy, on-site solar arrays, and dynamic electricity tariffs. Dürr CTS also provides electric retrofit options for existing installations, alongside future-proof hybrid models capable of switching between gas and electricity as carbon pricing fluctuates.
