AkzoNobel Secures Contract to Coat Trio of New Baltic Ferries

Date: 07/04/2026

This project is a collaboration between AkzoNobel, the Remontowa shipyard, and the operator Unity Line. To protect surfaces exposed to heavy mechanical loads, the car decks were coated with Interzone® 954GF, which is a specialised abrasion-resistant epoxy.

AkzoNobel has announced it is supplying high-performance marine coatings for three new roll-on/roll-off passenger ferries, the first of which has recently entered service on the Baltic Sea.

The Jantar Unity, operated by Unity Line, is currently sailing between Świnoujście (Poland) and Trelleborg (Sweden). The vessel is protected by 280,000 litres of coatings from AkzoNobel’s International® brand.

“The proven quality of these coating solutions is vital for the remaining ferries in the RoPax project. Our cooperation with AkzoNobel has a direct impact on the quality of the vessels we build,” has stated Katarzyna Antoń, Head of Marketing at Unity Line.

The Jantar Unity is designed to meet modern environmental and mechanical standards:

  • Mechanical Protection: The car decks feature Interzone® 954GF, an abrasion-resistant epoxy coating designed to withstand heavy mechanical loads.
  • Hybrid Propulsion: The 195.6-metre ship uses four dual-fuel engines (LNG and marine diesel) in a hybrid configuration to lower fuel consumption.
  • Emission Standards: The vessel complies with IMO Tier III standards, currently the most stringent emission regulations for marine craft.

“The company looks forward to seeing the remaining two ferries on the Baltic Sea shortly,” has added Mirosław Pawlik, AkzoNobel’s Sales Manager for Marine Coatings Central Europe.
