In order to address the perennial corrosion-related issues that compromise asset integrity, The Malaysian company PETRONAS has announced the launch of the in-house developed paint additive for steel structures ProShield+, formulated using ultra-high barrier advanced graphene material.

ProShield+ has been proven to strengthen the resistance of coatings against harsh weather conditions and protect assets from corroding agents. Its formulation contains three times higher water barrier properties than conventional epoxy paint and helps to improve adhesion as well as resistance against abrasion and UV.

The new additive designed by PETRONAS can be added to major paint systems to double the average lifespan of surface coating, up to 16 years. In addition, it does not require any change to the existing coating blending process and can be applied in the same way as other layers.

An innovative paint formulated with ProShield+ has already been employed to coat the landing platform on a vessel, improving the integrity of the asset and its sustainability. The properties of the additive create a tortuous pathway in the coating that hinders corroding agents from reaching the surface of the steel. Based on a simulated calculation, its application can reduce overall carbon footprint by an average of 50% per platform per year and reduce maintenance by up to 66%.

“As a dynamic global player in the energy industry, PETRONAS is progressively stepping out and constantly pursuing innovation to address business pain points and sustainability concerns. ProShield+, PETRONAS’ first advanced material product, a result of dedicated research and development in advanced materials, is part of PETRONAS’ dynamic venture into growth areas to facilitate energy transition,” has stated Datuk Bacho Pilong, the senior vice-president for Project Delivery and Technology at PETRONAS.
