The Resins Production of Huntsman Implemented a Mass-Balance Concept

Date: 08/05/2023

Huntsman implemented a mass-balance concept for its Swiss epoxy resins facility and received the REDcert2 certification.

Huntsman has recently announced that the company has decided to implement a mass-balance concept for its Monthey (Switzerland) epoxy resins production site, achieving the REDcert2 certification that covers several products used in a variety of consumer and industrial markets.

“We have chosen to implement the Mass Balance Concept to reduce the environmental impact of the products and solutions we provide to our customers. We assist our clients in achieving their goals through the option to intentionally select a product with a carbon footprint that is substantially lower than the average of the global market. This concept enables customers to save a significant proportion of CO2 emissions without compromising on performance, while avoiding costly re-qualifications,” has stated Philippe Christou, the head of environmental and technology intelligence for the Advanced Materials division of Huntsman.

The mass-balance approach refers to the mixing of fossil fuels and renewable or recycled raw materials into existing systems and production processes, while rigorously tracking their quantities and translating them into mass-balance units that are digitally attributed to specific products. A third party then certifies and confirms the recycled or renewable content of the final products. In this way, customers can reach their sustainability targets while the company reduces its own environmental footprint.
