AkzoNobel Unveils Self-Cleaning Architectural Coating to Support China’s Urban Renewal

AkzoNobel plans to roll out the TRINAR SC Series to further high-end building applications, strengthening its portfolio of high-performance architectural coatings for China’s evolving construction market.

AkzoNobel has launched a new self-cleaning extrusion coating in China designed to help remove dust and stains from exterior walls using natural rainfall.

Developed specifically to support China’s urban renewal efforts, the TRINAR® SC Series targets the high-end building market. It addresses growing demand for protective solutions suitable for structures featuring complex curved surfaces and irregular architectural forms.

The coating incorporates hydrophilic self-cleaning technology and is certified to the international AAMA 2605 weatherability standard. In addition to delivering long-lasting surface protection, it maintains a pristine, like-new façade over time.

By reducing the frequency of manual high-rise maintenance, the next-generation coating helps lower operation and maintenance costs across a building’s lifecycle. It also cuts the consumption of water, chemicals, and other maintenance resources typically required for exterior upkeep. These properties make it particularly suited to complex curtain wall geometries whilst supporting more sustainable building operations.

As China continues to focus on premium building quality, high-end commercial developments are increasingly incorporating striking, irregular architectural designs. However, these complex shapes make traditional façade cleaning far more technically demanding.

The factory-applied coating underwent extensive long-term on-site testing at an office project in the Dongying Economic Development Zone, where it demonstrated consistent self-cleaning performance. Beyond the pilot project, the system has already been deployed across several premium developments, including 16 On An Street in Hong Kong.
