BASF Coatings Achieves Major Sustainability Milestone with 100% Renewable Electricity Across European Plants

Date: 27/05/2026

This transition serves as a critical mechanism for lower CO2 production, directly supporting automotive manufacturers and other industrial customers in meeting their strict climate and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) targets.

In a major stride forward for the paints and coatings sector, BASF Coatings has officially completed the rollout of renewable electricity across all of its European production sites. This achievement marks a key milestone in the company's Carbon Management Roadmap and its broader sustainability strategy. While sites across Europe have completed the switch to renewable power, operations in France will continue to use the country’s low COnational power mix.

The European transition is part of a comprehensive, global package of measures designed to curb long-term production-related emissions. BASF Coatings is actively transforming its global production network, having already transitioned selected facilities in North America and Asia to renewable energy sources. Alongside these energy shifts, the company is planning a worldwide expansion of energy- and material-efficiency measures to drive further carbon reductions across industrial value chains.

“Completing the transition in our European production shows that we are pursuing our climate targets with consistency. By 2030, we aim to cut our specific CO2 emissions by 40 percent. At the same time, using renewable energy lowers the Product Carbon Footprint of our coating solutions. This enables our customers to manufacture and launch products with a reduced carbon footprint,” has stated Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings.

By transitioning to renewable electricity, BASF Coatings significantly reduces its Scope 2 emissions. This allows the company to lower the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of its diverse portfolio, which includes innovative automotive OEM coatings, refinish coatings, and applied surface treatments for metal, plastic, and glass substrates.
