The project exemplifies Brenntag’s long-term commitment to decarbonising its global network and aligns with its goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2045.

Brenntag has announced the inauguration of the world’s first CO₂-emission-free chemical distribution site, marking a major step in its drive towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

Located in Traun (Austria), the site has undergone a comprehensive transformation in recent months. The project included major upgrades in energy efficiency and a complete redesign of the energy system. As a result, the facility now operates in a fully climate-neutral manner — a global milestone and a pioneering example for the chemical distribution industry.

“This project is much more than a technical success. It’s a milestone for Brenntag’s strong commitment to deliver on sustainability and climate neutrality by 2045. As a science-based company with a 150-year successful track record, we know exactly what thinking and acting sustainably means – and we deliver on it,” has stated Andreas Kicherer, Vice-President Sustainability at Brenntag.

This modernised facility serves as a blueprint and lighthouse project for Brenntag’s global network of around 600 sites across more than 70 countries. More than €1.5 million were invested in a holistic approach to reduce energy consumption. Measures included thermal renovation of buildings, control optimisation of heated acid and alkali tanks, the conversion of the heating system to groundwater heat pumps and low-temperature radiators, as well as the installation of a photovoltaic system to power heat pumps, site operations, and electric vehicle charging stations.

The initiative is expected to save approximately 120 tonnes of CO₂ annually — equivalent to the total energy use of around 50 households. The photovoltaic system, with a capacity of 220 kWp, is projected to generate around 220,000 kWh of electricity per year, fully covering the energy needs of the two heat pumps (rated at 73 kW and 110 kW).

Sustainability is a central element of Brenntag’s corporate strategy and a core pillar of its ‘Strategy to Win’. The project was co-financed by the Brenntag Carbon Fund, which supports the development of sustainable logistics models across the company’s global operations.
