The global protective coatings manufacturer Carboline has recently announced the launch of the polyurethane Carbothane DTM Mastic coating, a one-coat solution for emergency maintenance or quick-turn coating projects.

Carbothane DTM Mastic is a high solids, high gloss, buildable, two component, weatherable urethane-based hybrid coating that can be employed as a direct- to-metal or finish coat with surface tolerant properties for maintenance applications, so it is particularly suitable for minimally prepared steel surfaces. As a matter of fact, its mastic properties ensure corrosion protection and, as a urethane, it retains its colour and gloss for long.

It adheres to tightly bound rust, bare metal, aged coatings and other surfaces. Carbothane DTM Mastic possess also fast dry times and easy-handling characteristics, as well as exhibiting hardness and resistance to impact, marring, abrasion, chemicals and staining.

“The value of Carbothane DTM Mastic in the market is clear: better corrosion protection and great visual appeal in a single coat. It performs exceptionally even over marginal surfaces, so it is ideal for unplanned spot maintenance or emergencies,” has stated Jeff Anderson, the executive vice-president of Quality, R&D and Commercial Resources for Carboline.

In July 2023, Carbothane DTM Mastic was tested on an emergency pipeline coating project at a liquid terminal in Philadelphia (United States of America), after corrosion and discoloration were found. The terminal owner needed the piping repainted quickly to remain compliant with regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The product was applied by hand in tough conditions, including a minimally prepared surface, the presence of moisture and very hot summer temperatures. The application was smooth and the coating performed as intended, bringing the piping back into EPA compliance with no fines.

“This field trial and other recent success stories like it demonstrate the immediate impact Carbothane DTM Mastic has had on unplanned or emergency coating project outcomes. Every product we develop is intended to solve specific problems, so the response of the market to Carbothane DTM Mastic so far is a great sign,” has commented Justin Manuel, the director of Carboline.
