PPG has unveiled its 2023 Color of the Year: the “bluish, greenish” Vining Ivy.

PPG announced that the company’s colour experts have selected Vining Ivy (PPG1148-6) as 2023 Color of the Year for both the Glidden and PPG paint brands. This versatile “bluish-greenish-something-in-betweenish” is a trendy addition to contemporary designs or a refined pop of colour for those with more traditional taste.

“Consumers are seeking to simplify in this post-COVID era, as the past two years have shed a new light on the importance of serenity and little moments,” said Ashley McCollum, Glidden colour expert. “Vining Ivy embodies this vibe perfectly. It is energizing yet grounding, and it works in literally any space. Its versatility takes the guesswork out of design, leaving consumers with more time to indulge in the things that matter most to them.”

Vining Ivy intertwines a bold blue and a refined green to create a colour symbolic of deep water. It can be used to set a calming mood in spaces, as its blue communicates feelings of tranquillity while the emerald evokes feelings of balance. When paired together, these two undertones create an ultra-rich, trendy colour suited for both exterior and interior commercial and residential spaces.

“Those who love this trendy hue but are still feeling in-betweenish on how to bring it into their space can treat themselves to the understated elegance of a teal accent wall or serve up a statement by featuring Vining Ivy on their kitchen cabinetry,” McCollum said. “Even the most modest spaces can benefit from the teal treatment. For those short on square footage but big on style, we recommend using this rich hue as a bold contrast to a neutral palette, making a petite room feel plush.”

PPG also announced that Vining Ivy, is expected to shape the styling direction of industrial and consumer products as well, including cookware, consumer electronics and office furniture.

“We are seeing green on a broader range of product applications than ever before,” said Vanessa Peterson, PPG global colour styling leader, Industrial Coatings. “We felt compelled to recognize its ongoing influence with the 2023 selection because it has infiltrated the market in such a strong and powerful way.”

“For furniture, the use of green can be calming in the workplace and help employees feel nurtured,” Peterson said. “When used in consumer electronics, green feels safe and helps people engage with technology. For kitchenware, Vining Ivy complements various food colours and coordinates well with stainless steel, bringing a touch of luxury to kitchens.”

PPG’s global team of colour stylists also have curated a palette of 45 coordinating hues for a Reflection-themed colour collection, which is inspired by the shared – and growing – appreciation for minimalism, quiet design, biophilia and solace. The compilation is organized into three colour stories: Serenity, Origin and Duality.

Serenity reflects the desire for calm and solitude in a chaotic world, featuring a palette milky pastels, watery tones and warm neutrals. Origin aims at capturing the authentic beauty of nature through a bio-palette curated with organic hues. Duality encompasses both traditional and contemporary styles, leaning into contrasts and is a means of self-expression through bold and bright shades, clean pastels and strong neutrals.
