Axalta unveiled its Global Automotive Colour of the Year 2022: Royal Magenta, a deep cherry colour that brings to market a refined and optimized finish for the future of mobility.

Axalta Coating Systems, a supplier of liquid and powder coatings, presented its Global Automotive Colour of the Year 2022. The choice fell on Royal Magenta, an intense cherry colour that introduces a particularly refined finish to the market enriched with merlot and garnet hues. In the sunlight the colour looks like a berry red, while at night it shows a darker and more mysterious aspect.

Royal Magenta is suitable for any type of vehicle, elegant, functional and is engineered to work with radar systems used on autonomous vehicles of all sizes. The elegance of Royal Magenta stems from Axalta's experience in providing luxury finishes to the mobility market and is linked to global colour trends that convey elegance with an offer of indulgent and festive colours. Burgundy, violet and cherry-like shades are becoming more fashionable on the market.

“Royal Magenta delivers a new luxury look that is optimized for future mobility,” said Hadi Awada, Senior Vice President, Global Mobility Coatings at Axalta. “With innovative mobility-sensing and environmentally optimized waterborne technologies, we are helping the mobility industry transition toward increasingly sustainable solutions, electric vehicles and autonomous driving.”

“This year, we have designed a complex-looking colour that can be applied in a simplified manner,” said Nancy Lockhart, Global Product Manager of Colour at Axalta. “The design process began by tinting waterborne paints with various layering systems to provide depth and colour. With sustainability in mind, the end colour was achieved with a conventional basecoat – clearcoat layering. It's as easy on the eyes as it is to apply.”
