Setting new standards for Architectural Coatings

In today's environmentally conscious marketplace, formulators are challenged to be sensitive to the potentially negative environmental impacts of their systems. As global trends and regulations move away from many traditional materials, formulators are looking to transition to more environmentally friendly systems. Formulators are also challenged with reducing or even eliminating VOCs from their architectural systems. Furthermore, the desire to extend the longevity and durability of coatings is strong as this also pays into the trend of sustainability.

SPHERILEX® - Bringing abrasion resistance to your Architectural Coatings

Evonik has developed SPHERILEX®, a novel silica technology for the coatings industry. This additive increases the durability of architectural paints by improving their burnish and scuff resistance. The novel silica technology also provides a high degree of formulation freedom and a more durable finish for matt coatings. When it comes to quality, mechanical resistance is an important point of differentiation, especially for colored interior wall paints, where any changes in gloss are highly visible. Formulators can significantly improve this property by optimizing their paint with spherical silica. Architectural paints can be distinguished according to their application as well as by different technical properties: Interior architectural paints include coatings for wallpaper and interior plaster, and also for drywall or gypsum boards. These paints are often formulated at a high pigment volume concentration (PVC), resulting in a matt to deep matt finish. Burnishing is a form of physical damage to the appearance of the coating film, caused by polishing or abrasive forces. Repeatedly wiping an area with a soft textile, or sliding along it with the elbow or a soft object, increases the gloss in this spot. This causes the paint finish to appear patchy or even damaged, as affected areas are clearly visible due to the uneven gloss. The effect is particularly noticeable for interior wall paints in dark colors.

Durable and sustainable

Interior wall paints usually consist of a mixture of solid particles, with different particle sizes and morphologies. In matt finish paints, that leads to a rough and irregular surface. While this is necessary for the matt or deep matt appearance of the paint, it also makes it vulnerable to damage by mechanical stress. Burnishing is a form of physical damage to the appearance of the coating film, caused by polishing or abrasive forces. Repeatedly wiping an area with a soft textile or sliding along it with the elbow or a soft object, increases the gloss in this spot. This causes the paint finish to appear patchy or even damaged, as affected areas are clearly visible due to the uneven gloss. The effect is particularly noticeable for interior wall paints in dark colors. However, formulations with spherical particles produce significantly more robust surfaces. As a result, coatings have a much higher tolerance for abrasion and show a greater resistance to burnishing and scuffing. The spherical particles in SPHERILEX® prevent direct contact with items that wipe over the surface, leading to less abrasion.

SPHERILEX® achieves great results in tactile experience, as it enables formulators to produce paints with a textured effect for interior wall paints. Its spherical surface texture counteracts the roughness of the paint to the extent that a velvety surface is created with outstanding haptic. https://products.evonik.com/assets/83/82/Asset_688382.pdf

TEGO® Phobe - Hydrophobing agents for protecting façade paints and plasters

Treating surfaces–such as exterior walls–with water-repellent materials (or materials otherwise impenetrable to water) is an effective method of protection from weathering. To achieve outstanding hydrophobization, different types of silicone chemistries are used.

For decades, facade paints have had two important functions: They lend an attractive appearance and offer protection from the effects of weathering. Therefore, producers of premium facade paints have worked hard to optimize these two properties in their products. Silicone resin paints are now state-of-the-art options for exterior applications. These paints contain emulsified silicone resins in addition to a primary binder, which is generally a styrene-acrylate dispersion. Such paints have excellent weathering resistance and a long service life. Over the last few years, however, customer requirements have increased. The color selection needs to be larger. The facade needs to be slower to soil than before and all these performance characteristics need to be achieved by environmentally compatible means.

Evonik raises the bar for façade paints and plasters with its new silicone resin technology. Check out our factsheet for TEGO® Phobe 1659 and 1409: https://products.evonik.com/assets/69/05/196905.pdf

TEGO® Viscoplus - Rheology modifier for waterborne Decorative Coatings

Rheological factors play a key role in all stages of a coating’s lifetime, from the manufacturing to the storage procedure and finally to the application properties of a protective, decorative film. Therefore, rheological additives do have a high impact on the quality of paints and coatings. Pseudoplastic or shear thinning behaviour – viscosity decreases as the shear rate increases. Waterborne formulations naturally tend to exhibit a pseudoplastic rheology profile. The use of rheological additives allows the flow behavior of coatings to be adjusted in a targeted manner and thus obtain effects such as high drag resistance, film thickness, gloss development, leveling and spatter resistance.
