SurTec Made Its Debut at WindEnergy Hamburg: Engineered Surfaces for Wind Power

Date: 07/10/2026

SurTec made its debut at WindEnergy Hamburg 2026, presenting its portfolio of chemical specialities for demanding surface applications in the wind energy industry.

Wind energy systems must perform reliably over long periods and under challenging weather conditions, both onshore and offshore. This places high demands on the external and internal surfaces of components. At WindEnergy Hamburg, SurTec showcased solutions designed to address these challenges, with a particular focus on Anti-Friction Coatings for dry lubrication. The portfolio presented at the event also included solutions for high-level corrosion protection and effective parts cleaning, as well as precote® coatings for locking and sealing threaded parts.

“Our strengths lie in our broad surface treatment expertise and global presence. With our local teams, we are always close to our customers and deliver customised surface treatment solutions throughout the entire value chain of their products,” has explained Christian Gundlach, Global Business Development Manager at SurTec.

Wherever components move, slide or are assembled under pressure, friction becomes a challenge. SurTec’s Anti-Friction Coatings offer a smart solution: dry lubricating layers that primarily reduce friction permanently while also being capable of providing corrosion protection.

Depending on the specific application, these coatings help reduce assembly forces, improve wear resistance, prevent galling and minimise stick-slip effects. As demand for PFAS-free Anti-Friction Coatings continues to grow, SurTec offers a broad portfolio of PFAS-free products combining reliable performance with regulatory readiness.

In plain bearings, Anti-Friction Coatings ensure the presence of a lubricating film when oil lubrication cannot be provided, such as during start-stop cycles, emergency operation, or during the transport and installation of wind turbines. Threaded connections benefit from a defined coefficient of friction even after multiple tightening cycles. SurTec’s Anti-Friction Coatings therefore facilitate assembly and contribute to smoother operation throughout the lifetime of a component.

Threaded parts require more than the right coefficient of friction. As a proven technology in the automotive industry, precote® coatings offer significant potential for threaded applications in the wind energy sector.

Microencapsulated, modified acrylates combined with specific precote® binders can reliably lock, seal, clamp, assemble and disassemble threaded parts, helping to increase operational safety and reduce maintenance requirements. PFAS-free precote® solutions with equivalent performance are also available, helping customers meet regulatory requirements. Furthermore, precote® coatings can be combined with a wide range of electroplated surface finishes.

For demanding offshore environments, SurTec’s zinc and zinc-alloy processes provide a high level of corrosion protection for steel components and bolts. To meet the specific operating requirements of components used, for example, in hydraulic systems, drivetrains and orientation control systems, plated surfaces can be further customised using SurTec’s passivations and topcoats.

Sufficiently clean surfaces provide the foundation for optimum coating performance while also delivering value in their own right, as technical cleanliness is crucial to flawless assembly and the long-term operation of components such as gearboxes. SurTec offers aqueous cleaning processes designed to meet these technical cleanliness requirements wherever they arise throughout a component’s lifecycle.

From 22 to 25 September 2026, SurTec experts joined Freudenberg Sealing Technologies, Freudenberg Performance Materials and Freudenberg Flow Technologies in Hall B6, Booth 449 at WindEnergy Hamburg. The event provided an opportunity to present SurTec’s surface treatment expertise to the wind energy industry and to discuss specific applications, technical requirements and surface challenges with industry professionals.
