BASF’s Renewable Carbon unit plays a key role in enhancing the sustainability of the company’s operations by focusing on optimising the sourcing of renewable feedstocks. This initiative aims to provide customers with a clear and practical roadmap to support their own sustainability and decarbonisation targets.

BASF’s Intermediates division, one of the world’s leading producers of amines, has announced a major sustainability milestone: the complete conversion of its European amines production to 100% renewable electricity. The transition, which will begin in May 2025, covers production sites in Ludwigshafen (Germany) and Antwerp (Belgium).

“With renewable electricity, we help our customers to progress on their sustainability journey. We are developing additional offers to meet our customers’ demands and look forward to engaging in discussions about solutions to further reduce the product carbon footprint,” has stated Wolfgang Kanther, Vice-President Amines Europe at BASF’s Intermediates division.

This move is expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 188,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents compared to 2020 levels. The change represents an average product carbon footprint (PCF) reduction of around 8% across the entire European amines portfolio. The shift aligns with BASF’s broader climate commitment to cut its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, compared with a 2018 baseline. Customers will experience a seamless transition, as the use of renewable electricity becomes the new standard across the amines portfolio. BASF assures that product quality and supply continuity will remain unaffected.

“Sustainability starts with us. By powering our European amines production with renewable electricity, we are helping to lower the carbon footprint of our products and supporting our customers in reducing their Scope 3 emissions. This transition strengthens our ambition to be the preferred partner for sustainable intermediates,” has added Vasilios Galanos, Senior Vice-President Europe, BASF Intermediates division.

This development is part of a wider initiative by the Intermediates division to embed more sustainable practices across its global operations. The company continues to explore additional measures, including sourcing low-emission steam, utilising renewable raw materials such as low-PCF methanol and ammonia, and investing in innovative technologies like industrial heat pumps.
