The increased production of resins and raw materials will allow Evonik to strengthen its position in the chemicals market for paints and coatings.

The Coating & Adhesive Resins business of the international specialty chemicals supplier Evonik has recently announced it has expanded the production capacities of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadienes (HTPB) in its Marl-based facility (Germany).

HTPB are commercialised under the brand POLYVEST® HT and consist of a liquid hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene produced by free-radical polymerisation. The polymer has a highly hydrophobic polybutadiene backbone and primary hydroxyl groups for precise chemical modification. They are used as a polyol component for coatings applications, while the POLYVEST HT-A is designed for aerospace applications.

“By expanding our operations, we will continue to provide reliable service to our global customers. In a highly competitive market, we are strengthening our position as a cost and innovation leader,” has stated Stefan Pfaffenbach, Head of Evonik Coating & Adhesive.

The butadiene is produced directly at the Marl site and the hydrogen peroxide is supplied by the Evonik Group. So, the company benefits from security of supply of raw materials for its POLYVEST production. In addition, the application technology, research and development teams of the company are also located at the Marl location - thus providing a seamless connection from development and laboratory tests, up to production.

“Dual-use products such as polybutadienes require a high degree of sensitivity and expertise when dealing with customers and authorities. So, when it comes to marketing this highly specialised product, we can rely on our colleagues’ experience and expertise to promote the additional capacities,” has added Jürgen Herwig, Head of the Polybutadienes and Specialty Acrylates product line at Evonik.
