Built on the strong track record of Hempaguard X7, the new formulation of Hempel features a specially designed topcoat for newbuilds, enabling fuel savings of up to 20%.

Hempel has unveiled Hempaguard NB, a pioneering high-performance silicone hull coating developed specifically for application during the newbuilding phase. This innovation brings the proven fuel efficiency and fouling protection of Hempaguard to vessels from the moment they enter service – without the need for pre- or post-delivery dry docking.

Hempaguard NB delivers trusted silicone hull coating performance directly to the newbuild stage, removing the logistical and financial challenges previously associated with applying silicone coatings during construction. It also stands apart as the only silicone solution tailored to endure the atmospheric conditions of shipyard environments, making it a true game-changer in the marine coatings sector.

“Hempaguard NB brings the industry’s most advanced silicone hull coating technology, proven to deliver significant fuel savings and reduce emissions, into the newbuilding phase for the very first time. Developing Hempaguard NB meant reimagining how silicone coatings are formulated for the construction phase, delivering a solution that maintains long-term performance without the need for post-delivery application. It’s a technical breakthrough that ensures vessels are equipped with proven, high-efficiency fouling protection from the very first day at sea,” has stated Alexander Enström, Executive Vice President and Head of Marine at Hempel A/S.

With the launch of Hempaguard NB, Hempel extends its market-leading Hempaguard range to include a solution specifically engineered for shipyards and vessel owners seeking protection and efficiency from day one. This development represents a significant leap forward in hull coating technology.

Historically, applying advanced silicone coatings at the newbuild stage has proven difficult due to the need for highly controlled environments. Traditional silicone coatings are often only feasible either just before delivery or in post-delivery dry docks – both of which can lead to project delays and increased costs.
So, Hempaguard NB overcomes these barriers by combining the well-established performance of Hempaguard X7 – with nearly 5,000 applications globally and verified benefits in terms of fuel savings and decarbonisation – with a new, cutting-edge silicone topcoat purpose-built for the construction phase.

Shipowners can expect:

  • Up to 20% fuel savings
  • Just 1.2% average speed loss
  • Up to 120 idle days free from fouling

This means vessels can enjoy premium performance immediately upon delivery, alongside long-term benefits in operational efficiency, compliance with environmental regulations, and reduced total cost of ownership. For shipyards, Hempaguard NB offers a unique selling point and competitive edge, unlocking the full potential of silicone coatings for newbuild applications.
