Jotun’s collaboration with Messina reflects a joint drive for innovation and sustainability, helping the Italian shipowner maintain efficiency on demanding routes.

Jotun has announced a major step forward in its Clean Shipping commitment through a new commercial agreement with Italian shipowner Ignazio Messina & C. for the use of its Hull Skating Solutions (HSS).

The Jolly Rosa will be fitted with Jotun’s HSS, which includes the HullSkater – developed in collaboration with Kongsberg – to enable proactive cleaning and inspections of the vessel’s hull. The system integrates high-performing coatings, continuous monitoring and technical services, and comes with a clean hull guarantee.

“As a company with a long history of operating in complex and challenging trades, we are constantly seeking innovations and solutions that will benefit our operations in the long run. Jotun’s HSS will help us in the route towards more effective environmental sustainability targets. Thanks to this agreement, our ships’ hulls will perform better and we are oriented to further implement these new innovative technologies,” has stated Andrea Gais, CEO of Gruppo Messina Spa and Chairman of Ignazio Messina & C. Spa.

Jotun’s tailored proposal was welcomed by Messina, who values the advantages of advanced hull protection and performance monitoring. The agreement was formally signed at Jotun’s headquarters in Sandefjord (Norway), further strengthening a relationship that has already seen Messina adopt Jotun antifoulings and HPS across its fleet.

“We are proud to support Ignazio Messina & C. in their clean shipping journey. Not only will HSS provide excellent in-operation hull performance, but it will also position Messina as an innovative partner with sustainability as a main focus for their customers,” has commented Giulia Nebbia, Area Sales Manager at Jotun.

The solutions deployed across the Messina fleet are expected to prevent around 11,800 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually compared with market average products, based on ISO 19030 calculations. This adds to Jotun’s wider environmental impact: in 2024, its coatings helped customers avoid 11.1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, verified by DNV.

Messina will also gain from Jotun’s HullKeeper programme, which provides real-time performance monitoring and fouling risk assessments. This allows shipowners to make data-driven decisions, optimise fuel consumption and maintain hull efficiency throughout a vessel’s service life.

“Hull performance management is getting ever more important for fleet management; minimising hull resistance is the first step to improving the energy efficiency of the vessel in order to pursue environmental targets. Together with digital tools and monitoring systems, Jotun solutions will support our Technical Department in our decarbonization journey,” has added Andrea Gais.

“We are reliant on partners like Messina to be able to deliver on our mission: Helping the industry cut carbon emissions, preserve fuel and protect biodiversity. This agreement not only strengthens the partnership between Jotun and Ignazio Messina & C. but also sets a benchmark for cleaner operations in the maritime industry. This inspires us to keep innovate and continue to deliver great solutions to the market,” has concluded Morten Fon, President and CEO of Jotun.
