Developed by Cortec, MCI-309, a corrosion inhibitor that protects metal surfaces in recessed areas if the grouting is delayed, has been recognized in numerous projects in Europe.

MCI®-309, a patented technology developed by Cortec to protect reinforcing metal in concrete from corrosion, is experiencing a rapid growth across the globe. Constructors and designers are relying on it because of its proven efficiency and the environmental advantages.

Delays might occur during large construction works and grouting can be postponed up to several months due to cold weather, transit of precast segments, or other project delays. In environments with extreme moisture, chlorides, or high temperatures, this could lead to corrosion. Cortec has thus created MCI-309, a Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor™ that does not require flashing before grouting. The product has also been recently improved by the removal of silica from its formulations and can provide up to 24 months of protection.

Characteristics and uses

MCI-309 is a powder-based Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor that helps to protect ferrous and aluminum metals situated in recessed areas, interior cavities, and structural voids. Right after the application, this dry method vaporizes and forms a molecular layer of corrosion inhibitors on the metal surface. If moisture or other elements compromise the layer, it will be automatically replenished, since new vapour will be continuously released from the powder carrier.

MCI-309 is considered ambiodic (mixed), as it protects both anodic and cathodic corrosion sites of the metal. It does not contain silica, silicates, phosphates, nitrites, or heavy metals. It also requires little to no surface preparation and is easy to apply by dusting, fogging, or sprinkling.

While oily or grease-based corrosion inhibitors need to be cleaned off prior to concrete or grout placement (an expensive and time-consuming process), with MCI-309 the removal is not required; however, it can be carried out by air gun or water. Moreover, the product developed by Cortec does not affect physical properties of concrete and grout. It can also be fogged into several other tubular structures, pipes, and vessels where inaccessible or recessed metal surfaces are at risk for corrosion.

MCI-309 is being used in the construction of the Taro Bridge (Italy) to delay corrosion and extend the lifecycle of the structure. Cortec’s powder product will be applied to the cable after tensioning.

MCI-309 has been used also for corrosion protection of PT concrete segments of the Frederikssund bridge over the Roskilde Fjord, in Denmark.
