Sherwin-Williams’s Acrolon 680 represents a significant step forward in production efficiency, simplifying the coating process while delivering dependable, long-term results.

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine has introduced Acrolon™ 680, a high-solids direct-to-metal (DTM) polyurethane coating designed to accelerate applications and improve durability across industrial and marine environments. The new single-coat topcoat reduces labour, material use and downtime by combining minimal surface preparation with rapid drying and excellent coverage.

Engineered to meet the needs of fabricators and asset owners seeking both speed and resilience, Acrolon 680 can be applied directly to marginally prepared substrates, including SSPC-SP2 hand tool-cleaned steel with tightly adherent rust. Unlike conventional multi-coat acrylic or alkyd systems, Acrolon 680 delivers robust protection in a single, high-build layer, cutting application time while enabling faster return to service. Applicators can also choose from spray, brush or roller methods for maximum flexibility.

“Acrolon 680 provides simplified, yet robust, protection for surfaces not prepared with advanced methods, whether you’re producing new components, equipment or structures, or you’re cleaning up your existing assets. It can be used anywhere steel needs a single-coat and long-term protection. Given its ease of application, Acrolon 680 is the premier choice for production efficiency,” has stated Paul Trautmann, Marketing Director, Infrastructure, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine.

The coating provides superior chemical resistance and a tougher finish than traditional acrylics and alkyds, while remaining VOC-compliant. With 65% volume solids and a VOC content of less than 340 g/L, it is well suited for tanks, piping, valves, structural steel, marine vessels and equipment exposed to aggressive chemical processing conditions.

In addition to performance, Acrolon 680 enhances asset appearance, offering a high-gloss finish, excellent colour retention and resistance to extreme ultraviolet exposure and weathering. Fully customisable in any colour and compliant with SSPC Paint 36 standards, it ensures both long-lasting protection and a professional aesthetic.
