The expansion will allow BYK to increase the production of defoamers and surface additives for coatings.

The manufacturer of specialty chemicals BYK has recently announced that it has completed the expansion of its production site in Shanghai (China). The total investment of the phase II project (SCIP II) covers an area of 1.16 hectares and will allow the company to reach an annual capacity of 4,750 tons.

With the official start of project phase II, BYK is significantly expanding its production capacity in China, offering its customers a diverse and complete product range including defoamers and surface additives that can be used for automotive, industrial, furniture and architectural coatings, as well as for printing inks, adhesives, thermoplastics, thermosets and many other applications, as they comprise various systems such as solvent-borne or solvent-free and low and high polarity.

The entire phase II project was officially completed on 18th March 2022, while the production of the first pail of the surface additive BYKETOL-OK, applicable for automotive and industrial coatings, started on 8th July. The inauguration ceremony took place in December of the same year.

The site has also been recently equipped with a solar plant covering around 2,000 m2, in order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the company funded in Berlin (Germany) by Dr. Heinrich Byk. The solar panels will supply around 400,000 kWh of green electricity per year, reducing carbon emissions of almost 200 tons.

“The opening of SCIP II represents a crucial milestone in our global growth strategy. Many global value chains have a broad base in China. And China is the decisive growth market for us in the medium and long term,” has declared Tammo Boinowitz, the president of BYK. “BYK will continue to provide pioneering additive solutions coupled with an outstanding knowledge of the industry.”
