The new target underlines Hempel’s dedication to responsible business practices while ensuring its sustainability goals evolve alongside the company’s growth.
Hempel A/S has strengthened its commitment to sustainable growth with the approval of its updated Scope 3 emissions target by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The revised target shifts from a 50% absolute reduction to a 55% reduction in the intensity of Scope 3 emissions per euro value added (GEVA – Greenhouse Gas Emissions per Value Added). By linking emissions across the value chain to financial value created, Hempel aims to provide a more accurate reflection of its expanding business while remaining aligned with the 1.5°C pathway.
“Our ambition is as strong as ever. We remain firmly committed to reducing emissions in line with climate science, and this updated target ensures our goals stay both relevant and reflective of our evolving business. Since setting our original target in 2021, we’ve reshaped our business and sustainability landscape through acquisitions and divestments, alongside updated emissions data and an expanded value base. These shifts made recalibrating our Scope 3 baseline both necessary and timely,” has stated Emilie Barriau, Executive Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer at Hempel.
Scope 3 emissions are those generated indirectly across a company’s value chain, such as from raw materials, packaging, and transport. SBTi requires companies to revalidate their targets at least every five years or when significant business changes occur. By moving to a financial intensity target, Hempel ensures that profitability and sustainability go hand in hand. The approach highlights the company’s commitment to innovate and deliver solutions with higher sustainable value for customers while reducing the overall environmental footprint.
