Steelpaint Gains Network Rail Approval for New-Build Rail Structures

Date: 26/03/2026

Corrosion protection remains a critical concern for UK rail, with many maintenance projects involving steel replacement on aging bridges. Without new-build approval, Stelcatec could not be applied to these replacement sections.

Steelpaint has recently secured a key Network Rail approval, extending the use of its Stelcatec moisture-cure polyurethane coating system from maintenance work to new-build rail infrastructure projects across the UK.

The certification confirms that Stelcatec meets Network Rail specification NR/L3/CIV/039 for new steel structures, enabling the coating to be applied from first installation on newly constructed bridges, stations, platforms, and other rail assets. With approvals now covering both maintenance and new-build applications, Stelcatec can be specified across the full lifecycle of rail infrastructure, from fabrication through to long-term protection.

“This second approval is a major step forward for us in the UK rail market. Previously, Stelcatec was limited to repair and refurbishment. Now it can be used from the outset on new structures, streamlining corrosion protection strategies and reducing long-term maintenance requirements,” has stated Frank Müller, Director of Steelpaint.

Stelcatec is a one-component, moisture-cured polyurethane coating designed to protect steel in challenging site conditions. Unlike traditional multi-pack epoxy and polyurethane systems, it requires no mixing, tolerates variable humidity, and cures quickly under typical UK rail site conditions, including restricted access, weather constraints, and night-time work.

“The process is deliberately rigorous. Approval for both existing and new structures demonstrates consistent, reliable corrosion protection, whether applied to aged steel or brand-new assets. Stelcatec can be applied in a single shift, offering significant time and cost savings on projects involving new steel,” has added Andreas Engert, Technical Director at Steelpaint.

The approval comes as the UK rail sector continues to deliver major new-build and enhancement programmes, including HS2, the Transpennine Route Upgrade, and East West Rail. Network Rail’s current Control Period 7 (2024–2029) plan also includes station upgrades, capacity enhancements, and structural renewals across Great Britain.

“The new-build certification positions Stelcatec as a credible alternative to traditional multi-coat systems, offering construction efficiency, long service life, and reduced environmental controls,” has concluded Perry Poppelaars, Director at Recoat, Steelpaint’s UK agent.
