The commendation highlights Chemetall’s leadership in sustainability and the Pinghu site’s role as a model for green transformation within the region’s chemical industry.

Zhejiang Chemetall Surface Treatment Materials, the Pinghu-based site of BASF’s Coatings division – operating under the Chemetall brand – has received formal recognition from the Economic Development and Ecological Environment Bureau of Pinghu Dushan Port (China).

The site, operational since 2022, is Chemetall’s largest manufacturing facility worldwide. It now runs on 100% renewable electricity, achieved through the purchase of green energy and the installation of photovoltaic systems, including 2,500 m² of rooftop solar panels. This transition is projected to cut approximately 2,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by 2025, a significant step in reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint.

“At Chemetall, we have set ourselves ambitious sustainability targets for 2025, and making meaningful contributions to a more sustainable future is a top priority for us. Powering our largest site in Pinghu entirely with renewable electricity is a major milestone. We are extremely proud to be recognised by the local authorities, which reinforces the effectiveness of our sustainability strategy,” has stated Frank Naber, Senior Vice-President of Chemetall.

“We are honoured by this recognition from the Pinghu Dushan Port government. Our commitment to sustainability extends across the entire value chain – from integrating clean energy into our operations to developing advanced surface treatment technologies that support our customers in achieving their own environmental goals. We will continue to lead the way towards a more sustainable future,” has added Evelyn Shen, Vice-President Asia Pacific at Chemetall.

The Pinghu site is part of Chemetall’s broader global effort to reach 80% renewable electricity usage across all production facilities by 2025. The company is actively rolling out sustainability initiatives at multiple locations, aligning with the climate goals of BASF and BASF Coatings.

In the Asia Pacific region, Chemetall’s facility in Singapore is also set to begin using clean energy by the end of 2025 through the installation of solar panels, joining the ranks of the Pinghu and Melbourne (Australia) sites in advancing the company’s green energy transformation.
